Parents are the most important people in children's lives!
There is a reason why we as therapists would suggest ‘play’ as a means of dealing with children’s difficulties. Play is the primary way that children learn about their world and themselves, to express themselves and develop skills.
In this 10 week parent group program, you will learn the ‘best’ language to use to communicate with and relate to your children and observe how it strengthens and enhances your parent-child relationship, supporting your child to develop confidence, greater self control and resilience. Whilst we sometimes think play is trivial, in actuality it is one of the strongest supports for mental health, intellectual development, creativity, problem solving, flexibility and productive activity (Risë VanFleet, 2022).
You will achieve this through a powerful play method that has changed the lives of so many families we have worked with that were stressed, struggling and helpless.
But this is no ordinary play we are talking about. This is a 30 minute, once a week very special kind of play, based on the widely researched, highly effective educational and skill development program for parents/caregivers called Filial Therapy (Latin word for parent-child). We use some of our ‘tools of the trade’ that play therapists adopt in their play therapy sessions to help children who are struggling emotionally express and process their troubled feelings that may be as a result of stress or stressors in their life and develop their emotional intelligence skills accordingly.
What you get
This experiential learning greatly benefits caregivers because they will be taught to better understand their child’s feelings, motives and development, learn firsthand the importance of child centered play, and expand the ways they communicate with their children too. Testimonials
This was a great way to learn how to improve my relationship with my children, whilst being supported to identify and talk through triggers that continually prevented me from having the ability to self regulate, sometimes making connection a challenge during parenting. I noticed improved capacity within myself. This course gave me invaluable insight into the benefits of making time to do some weekly special play time with my child and was supported beautifully by Helen who nurtured our “mistakes” reframing them as learnings for self growth and expansion.
Helen is nonjudgmental and knowledgeable in her experience of understanding the dynamics that have evolved between adult and child, and she helps support parents in the group to, “be with” their child in a totally different way to the usual parenting/teaching style that many of us expect of ourselves as parents. This created a safe container for reflection and exploration and increased self awareness in the group. We could witness that when our child feels seen, heard and validated this starts (or continues) to open up a deeper connection between the parent and child. I noticed beautiful movement with the other participants, as they began to grow in confidence whilst feeling safe and able to be vulnerable. I would highly recommend this course to any parent wanting to deepen their understanding of both themselves as a parent and their child, so that they can give them the opportunity to process and integrate life’s experiences and connect in more intentional and healthy ways, sustaining and improving the family unit.
