#1 Self Expression
Play is a child’s medium for self expression and making sense of the world. What a child cannot say with words, they show us through their actions. Often children find it difficult to articulate emotions or challenging experiences. Play Therapy allows the child to do this through their most natural language: PLAY
#2 Emotional Regulation
The Play Therapist builds the child’s capacity for regulation and emotional expression by modelling mindfulness and self regulation skills as children learn best through observation. These skills then generalise into everyday life.
#3 Builds Strong Sense of Self & Confidence
Play Therapy provides a structured and systematic way in a secure environment for children to use their own internal resources that allows experimenting with new perceptions and behaviours that enhance their mastery and feelings about themselves.
#4 Integration
Through the facilitation of play, therapist authenticity, congruency and acceptance, the child is supported to explore and make sense of their thoughts, emotions and body sensations related to their their perceived challenges. Then, the Play Therapist helps the child learn how to regulate both the body and the mind through new perspective shifts and coping skills that lead to self mastery and trauma integration.
Play Therapy can be helpful in situations or conditions such as (not an exhaustive list):
- Facing or have faced medical procedures, chronic illnesses or is the sibling
- Developmental delays, Pre verbal/Non verbal
- Family or life adjustment issues ie. separation, death in the family, birth of a sibling
